Garbage in, Gospel Out

My new favorite turn of phrase…

On two occasions I have been asked,—”Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?” … I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

The above quote nicely demonstrates the concept of Garbage in, Gospel out, which seems to have invaded society. E-voting, blind reliance on information read off a screen, government IT projects that crash and burn spectacularly with huge cost overruns… While people in the know (sound pompous enough?) scream bloody murder at the abysmal PR IT/ICT is getting.
